I spent the next day at the station checking on Forensics and looking into Chad’s background. With the exception of a few speeding tickets, his record was clean. Karli was right about him being a trust fund baby. This guy had millions in liquid cash. Not to mention the flashy cars or the prime real estate he had recently acquired in one of the new residential towers on the Strip. Definitely not suspect material. A guy this loaded would never get his hands dirty. I still hadn’t ruled out the fact that he could have hired someone, but he seemed too selfish to care about anyone enough to kill them. My gut was telling me this was a crime of passion. Ms. Russo had died violently. Whomever did this was either emotionally invested or a psychopath. I didn’t get either vibe from O’Brien.

I checked my phone repeatedly while I was working, hoping Karli would call. To my dismay, she didn’t return any of the voicemails I had left during the day. I couldn’t really say that I was surprised. She was obviously terrified since her secret had been revealed. I needed to find a way to get through to her…to let her know why she had nothing to fear from me. I was ashamed to admit this, but I looked into her background as well that evening, telling myself it was what any good detective would do, but really I was just trying to get some more insight. There was nothing that really stood out though. She’d graduated from UNLV, worked a few jobs in college, and had a squeaky clean record...not even a parking ticket. I found myself staring at an old newspaper article online from a charity event her college sorority had hosted. It was a bikini car wash to benefit the children’s hospital. It stated that they’d raised a record amount in donations. When I looked at the picture I could easily see why. Karli stood there with a sexy smile, bent over a black corvette, wearing a lime green string bikini and holding a soapy sponge. That one earned me an extra long shower as soon as I got home.
